When G-d created the human race he granted us with a freedom of choice, but at the same time we are not free to act apart from His will. Believing we can master our own destiny, just by trying hard enough, or contrary, taking a passive path and relying completely on predestination will not always bring us to desired results. Sometimes we face unpredictable obstacles which are not consequences of our mistakes, but rather is pure manifestation of factors independent of our actions like misfortune, mental or physical sickness, various obligations and negative energies, or in other words - manifestation of divine providence. We cannot either know or understand G-d's will or plans. We can only ask Him for help, for His mercy. Gersh Nubirg implements this by writing kabbalistic amulets.
